FCBB Spotlight: Ohio Brass Arts Festival

(Spotlight features FCBB members, guest artists and events)

Seven bands will be featured at the inaugural Ohio Brass Arts Festival on April 1st, 2007 near Columbus, Ohio, USA making it the largest British-style brass band festival in the States.

Sunday, April 1st marks the inaugural Ohio Brass Arts Festival (OBAF) sponsored by Colonial Music (a member of the Music Arts Center family) and hosted by the Central Ohio Brass Band (COBB) at Westerville South High School, just northwest of Columbus. Perhaps is was inevitable that the State of Ohio would have it's own annual event as Ohio has traditionally had the most NABBA member bands and holds the most NABBA titles of any state. In fact, 5 of the 7 bands performing at OBAF are from the Columbus area alone.

Festival organizers have said the goal of the festival is to promote the musicianship and comradary of brass bands that so often doesn't realize its full potential because of the relatively few annual events that local bands can participate in. Inspiration for the festival has come in many forms. From the NABBA Championships to the U.S. Open, the Ashland Hot Dog Festival to the RNCM Festival in Manchester, many ideas have been brought to this event that COBB truly hopes will make it a special day.

One part of the festival the organizers take pride in is the wide variety of the 7 participating bands at the festival, including contesting bands (Brass Band of Columbus, Central Ohio Brass Band and Brass Band of the Western Reserve), non-contesting bands (TBDBITL Alumni Club and Scioto Valley Brass & Percussion) and Salvation Army bands (Pendel Brass and the Central Ohio Youth Band), thus exhibiting the widest possible range of programming.

The event will also include two guest clincians from reigning National Champions (Dan King, solo cornet, BBC and Helen Tyler, solo baritone, Fodens Richardson Band). Additionally, several smaller ensembles will perform throughout the day, including a BBC ensemble and a Fountain City Brass Band ensemble (Twisted Steel). Lastly, there are expected to be several premieres of new works, which will be officially announced later.

The weekend schedule is as follows:

March 31st, 2007
2:30 pm - 4:30 pm: 22nd Annual God & Country Concert with Brass Band of Columbus and Pendel Brass & Singers. Capitol Theatre at the Verne Riffe Centre, Columbus, OH. (This is a free event, but tickets are required and available from the Columbus Salvation Army 614-221-6561 or pcain@use.salvationarmy.org)

7:00 pm - 10:00 pm: OBAF Dinner Event with pub quiz at the Winking Lizard Tavern ($18 and CASH bar. Cocktail hour begins at 6:00pm)

April 1st, 2007
12:30 pm - 6:00pm: Ohio Brass Arts Festival. Westerville South High School, Westerville, OH.

6:30pm - ???: Free dinner sponsored by Fado's Irish Pub, Easton Town Centre, Columbus, OH.

SUPPORT YOUR BAND

The Fountain City Brass Band is an American Heritage Foundation.

As a non-profit organization, the Fountain City Brass Band relies on grants and its corporate and private supporters for financial assistance. Without these generous tax deductible donations, our band could not continue recruiting talented players for the band or giving this area the same quality programs and guest artists.

Tickets sales account for only half of the costs of each concert. Our goal is to keep ticket prices within an affordable range so that all persons may have access to the performances. In order to continue giving the community the same level of quality band music, the band must raise funds to offset our costs.

This May, the FCBB will become the first American brass band to compete in the All-England International Masters Brass Band Championships in Cambridge, England. The Masters is a competition that invites some of the world's very best brass bands and the FCBB is humbled by their decision to grant our young band a chance to experience banding at the highest level.

While in England the band will also participate in the, over century old, tradition of the Whit Friday Marches, in addition to presenting concerts and clinics throughout the country.

The FCBB needs your support. The FCBB is a volunteer organization, so none of the members make any money performing in the group. In fact each band member pays probably close to $1000 each year, just to be a part of this fine ensemble. The English tour will end up costing the band around $60,000. If you would like to become a "Friend of the FCBB", and make a tax deductible donation to the band please contact Lee Harrelson at 816.305.4894 or at lee@fcbb.net. You may also contact Lee if you would like to travel with the band to England May 23-June 4, 2007 or the North American Brass Band Championships in Louisville, April 12-15, 2007.

Our "Friends of the FCBB" can choose from a variety of ways to assist us in producing the same exquisite programs, often with gifted guest artists brought in from all over the world. Outright gifts of cash, planned gifts and fundraisers are all ways individuals and groups can ensure the continued delivery of the timeless masterpieces and contemporary pops.

For more assistance on planned giving and how to participate in our fundraisers, simply call our office at (816) 305-4894 or email us at fcbb@fcbb.net.

Tax deductible cash gifts may be mailed to Fountain City Brass Band, Inc., PO Box 7119
